US Households Sitting on Estimated $750 Billion in Hidden Gold Wealth
A new report from AI-powered asset valuation platform Unvault estimates that U.S. households are sitting on $750 billion in intrinsic gold metal value in jewelry, a potentially overlooked category of household wealth.
The Jewelry Drawer Index by Unvault calculates that the average U.S. household holds about $5,700 in unappraised gold jewelry, with gold prices remaining near historic highs at around $4,400 per ounce.
This estimate is based on World Gold Council data showing Americans consumed 7,050 tonnes of gold jewelry between 1995 and 2025, with an estimated 5,288 tonnes still stored in American homes.
According to Unvault's analysis of over 50,000 platform evaluations, owners typically underestimate the current gold metal value of their jewelry by a factor of three or more, with 62% of U.S. jewelry owners having no insurance on their fine jewelry due to a lack of updated appraisals.
