US-Iran Conflict Drives Oil Prices Skyward
New York (AP) - The ongoing conflict between Iran and the US has driven up energy prices, causing Brent crude to soar above $100 a barrel for much of the spring. This surge in prices has resulted in elevated profits for major oil companies.
American oil giants Exxon Mobil and Chevron have reported massive profits, more than doubling their earnings in the second quarter. Their position as owners of refineries and extractors of oil and gas has allowed them to capitalize on the high demand for fuel.
The US government is considering a proposal to tax oil producers for war-related windfalls. This move would aim to redistribute some of the profits generated by the conflict to the public.
