US-Iran Conflict Sends Oil Prices Soaring, Stocks Tumbling
The US military's latest actions against Iran have caused a stir in global markets. The price of oil rose by 2.8% to $90.58 per barrel, while stocks fell on Wall Street.
The S&P 500 index dropped 0.4%, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average down 305 points or 0.6%. Energy stocks, however, gained ground, with Exxon Mobil rising 1.5% and Chevron increasing by 1.4%.
The losses were widespread across various sectors, but oil prices have been a major concern due to the ongoing conflict in the Strait of Hormuz. The US war with Iran has curtailed traffic through this vital shipping route, which accounts for about 20% of global oil shipments.
The situation has contributed to higher energy prices, exacerbating inflation and weighing on household spending and consumer confidence. As a result, the Federal Reserve may be forced to raise interest rates in an effort to cool inflation, despite its target of 2% being far exceeded.
