The West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil price neared $85 per barrel, building on Monday's 2.6% gain, while Brent settled just below $91 a barrel.
The expiration of an expiring agreement with Tehran technically occurred on Monday, but the two sides remain far apart on key issues, including control over the Strait of Hormuz.
