US-Iran Diplomacy Hopes Send Oil Prices Tumbling
Oil prices continued to decline on Tuesday, with Brent falling $3.30 to $80.47 per barrel and West Texas Intermediate dropping $3.67 to $76.67 per barrel.
The drop in oil prices was attributed to optimism among investors about a potential diplomatic resolution between the US and Iran regarding the Strait of Hormuz.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio claimed that progress had been made in talks with Iran and Oman, while Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent suggested that a final agreement could be reached within 24 hours.
Simon-Peter Massabni, head of business development at XS.com, stated that if negotiations between the US and Iran make meaningful progress, the market could continue pricing in a lower probability of supply disruptions, further reducing the geopolitical risk premium embedded in crude prices.
