US-Iran Talks Stall Over Nuclear Ambitions and Naval Blockade
Iran and the US are engaged in talks to end the ongoing conflict between the two nations. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said negotiations could 'take a few days,' but this has dimmed hopes for an immediate resolution.
A ceasefire was implemented in early April, but discussions have stalled over key issues including Iran's nuclear ambitions and the US naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz.
The two sides are working on a 14-point memorandum of understanding (MoU) that would halt the war and give negotiators 60 days to reach a final deal. The MoU includes an end to the conflict, the release of blocked Iranian assets, and the lifting of US sanctions in exchange for Tehran taking steps to ensure safe transit through the Strait of Hormuz.
The framework deal also includes the withdrawal of US forces from the vicinity of Iran and freedom to sell Iranian oil. However, Iran's nuclear program remains a contentious issue, with the US demanding that Tehran limit its enrichment activities and dismantle its nuclear sites during any halt in production.
