US-Iran Tensions Ease, Oil Prices Plummet 6.3%
Stocks on Wall Street saw mixed results on Monday as oil prices dropped following a pause in US-Iran tensions. The S&P 500 rose less than 0.1% after bouncing between gains and losses throughout the day, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average increased by 0.5%. Meanwhile, the Nasdaq composite fell 0.2%, its fourth consecutive loss.
The price of Brent crude dropped 6.3% to $85.87 a barrel for October delivery after surging over $100 last week due to US-Iran tensions. U.S. crude oil prices also declined by 7.5% to settle at $82.61 a barrel. The reduced conflict has had a ripple effect on global markets, with gasoline prices increasing and shipping costs rising.
Technology companies played a significant role in the market's fluctuations, with Nvidia falling 5% and Micron Technology declining by 2.3%. However, Microsoft rose 1.9%, while Apple increased by 1.2%. Communications company stocks saw gains as well, with Alphabet climbing 2.1%, Charter Communications jumping 6.7%, and Comcast rising 2.3%.
The Federal Reserve is set to provide an update on interest rate policy on Wednesday, which could influence the market's direction. Wall Street anticipates a nearly 36% chance of a rate hike this week, with some analysts predicting higher rates by the end of the year to combat inflation. Investors are closely monitoring corporate earnings reports for signs of consumer stress and whether the recent stock gains are justified.
