US-Iran Tensions Ignite Oil Price Surge as Tanker Hit in Strategic Strait
The global oil market experienced a significant surge on Tuesday as tensions between the US and Iran escalated. The UK Maritime Trade Operations Centre reported that a tanker passing through the Strait of Hormuz took three unidentified impacts, causing no casualties. In response to the incident, crude prices rose sharply, with International Brent crude increasing by 2.2% to $92.49 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate advanced 2.7% to $88.05.
The recent uptick in tensions began on Sunday when US forces targeted two Iran-owned rocket launchers positioned on Larak Island, which has long served as a strategic Iranian outpost. The strikes were followed by an assault against two US bases in Jordan, marking the first exchange of attacks in over a month. Both sides have indicated their willingness to respond to further aggression.
Analysts see the Larak action as a targeted effort to punish specific behavior rather than broadening war aims. Jason Brodsky, policy director at United Against Nuclear Iran, noted that Trump's unpredictability should concern Tehran, and warned of increased pressure leading to more aggressive Iranian actions.
