US-Iran Tensions Lift Oil Prices, Putting Spotlight on Serica Energy, Harbour Energy, and Transocean

The ongoing tensions between the US and Iran have disrupted supply routes and lifted fuel costs, putting oil and gas stocks in the spotlight. With consumers facing higher prices at the pump and supermarkets, energy producers are at the center of this shock.

Three large and financially stable oil and gas stocks that are closely exposed to the latest news are Serica Energy (AIM:SQZ), Harbour Energy (LSE:HBR), and Transocean (RIG).

Serica Energy, a UK-based oil and gas producer, generates about US$601 million in revenue from its North Sea operations. With its sizeable liquidity from new US$750 million reserves-based lending facilities and additional bond financing, Serica Energy sits at the crossroads of rising European energy security concerns and the latest spike in commodity prices.

However, the company carries real risks, including UK windfall taxes, dependence on mature North Sea infrastructure, and a dividend that is not fully covered by earnings or free cash flow. For investors who can weigh these trade-offs carefully, Serica Energy's mix of upside potential and policy uncertainty makes it a stock worth closer examination.

Harbour Energy, another UK-based oil and gas producer, has a large-scale portfolio with roughly 40% of production linked to Brent and 40% to European gas. With current pricing well below one estimate of fair value and future cash flow value per share, Harbour Energy may seem inexpensive. However, the company is still loss-making, has a dividend that is not covered by earnings, and carries higher funding risk due to reliance on external borrowing.

Transocean, a Switzerland-based offshore drilling contractor, supplies ultra-deepwater and harsh environment rigs to oil and gas companies. With its fleet of ultra-deepwater and harsh environment rigs becoming more attractive when producers look offshore to secure new barrels, Transocean provides direct exposure to higher oil prices triggered by the US-Iran conflict.
