US-Iran Tensions Send Oil Prices Soaring Amid UAE Economic Freeze
The ongoing tensions between the US and Iran have sent oil prices soaring to their highest level in over three weeks. On Wednesday, August 19, 2026, Brent settled at $91.02 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) reached $84.94 per barrel.
This comes as no surprise given the increasing hostilities between the two nations. The US has ruled out extending a 60-day ceasefire with Iran, and Tehran has reiterated its claim of control over the Strait of Hormuz.
Darrell Fletcher, managing director of commodities at Bannockburn Capital Markets, attributes the muted market reaction to the sheer volume of covert or 'dark' shipments slipping from the Strait of Hormuz. This is adding to a buffer against higher prices.
The situation has also led to a significant development in the region: the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has halted all economic ties with Iran, including trade, commercial exchanges, and financial transactions.
