US-Iran Tensions Soar as Washington Prepares 'Toughest Sanctions Ever'
The United States and Iran are locked in a heated standoff ahead of new economic sanctions set to be announced by Washington on Monday. The sanctions, described as 'the toughest in history,' could target not only Iran but also its major trading partners, such as China.
Iran is particularly vulnerable due to China's significant role in buying more than 80% of the country's seaborne oil exports, according to Kpler data. The U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will urge China to cooperate with Washington's efforts.
The tension has caused a significant disruption in oil traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, which is down from over 20 million barrels per day to just 8 million bpd. Iranian military chief Ali Abdollahi warned that Iran would respond severely to any threats, while President Masoud Pezeshkian emphasized the need for a diplomatic solution.
