US-Iran Tensions Spark Global Oil Price Surge
The escalating tensions between the US and Iran over the Strait of Hormuz have caused oil prices to surge by 5% to $87 per barrel. This has significant implications for Nigeria's economy, as the country gains an excess revenue of $22.15 per barrel based on its current budget projections.
Bank of America's head of commodities and derivatives research, Francisco Blanch, warned that oil prices could continue to rise if a resolution is not reached between the two parties. He noted that only a few ships can pass through the Strait, unlike in the past when about 140 ships used to do so.
The price increase has been felt globally, with Brent crude benchmarking other crudes, including Nigeria's Bonny Light and OPEC Basket, rising to $87 per barrel from $83 per barrel. The domestic market in Nigeria, however, has yet to respond fully to these developments.
