US-Iran War Goals Shift from Regime Change to Energy Price Stability
The US-Iran war has undergone significant shifts in goals since its inception six months ago. Initially, the administration aimed for Iran's complete surrender, regime change, and dismantling of military capabilities and support for regional proxies.
However, as the conflict dragged on, objectives were repeatedly revised. Vice President JD Vance recently stated that restoring energy price stability by keeping oil and gas flowing through the Strait of Hormuz is now a top priority.
This goal amounts to returning to the pre-war status quo, where the strait was open and Iran did not control which ships could pass or demand tolls for transit. The US had already possessed this reality before firing began.
The revised list of goals now includes ensuring that Iran never obtains a nuclear weapon, as stated by Vice President Vance. This is in stark contrast to the administration's earlier focus on preventing a nuclear-armed Iran.
