US Launches Airstrikes Against Iranian Oil Tankers in Strait of Hormuz
The US military launched airstrikes against three Iranian oil tankers on September 5 in retaliation for previous attacks on ships. The operation involved a mix of Air Force and Navy aircraft, including fighters and drones.
The attack was carried out in response to an unsuccessful Iranian ballistic missile attack on a US aircraft carrier and a guided-missile destroyer. Neither ship was hit.
According to CENTCOM commander Adm. Brad Cooper, the strikes were intended to impose an economic cost on Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). 'If you shoot at our ships, we will impose an even higher economic cost,' he said.
