US Military Advisers in Saudi Arabia Escalate Tensions Around Gulf Energy Infrastructure
The US military has deployed more than 100 advisers to Saudi Arabia, where they are providing intelligence and targeting support to the Kingdom in its military campaign against the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen.
This is not a new development, as the US advisory and targeting support for the Saudi campaign in Yemen has been switched on, curtailed, and restored across past phases of the conflict. However, the reappearance or expansion of this support has typically mattered less as a supply shock itself than as a marker of escalation risk around Gulf energy infrastructure.
The distinction to draw is between a sustained advisory presence and any retaliation against oil infrastructure or tankers, which can significantly impact crude prices. Historically, a sustained advisory presence has priced little crude premium on its own, but the threat of attacks on Saudi production and export facilities or interference with shipping through the Bab el-Mandeb and Red Sea can have more severe consequences.
