US Military Destroys Five Iranian Oil Tankers Amid Escalating Tensions
The US military has destroyed five Iranian oil tankers in response to missile attacks on its warships, escalating tensions between the two nations. The latest strikes come after Iran launched missiles towards US targets in Jordan, which were intercepted by the country's air defense systems.
In a statement, U.S. Central Command said it had targeted the tankers in the Gulf of Oman and near Kharg Island in the Strait of Hormuz. The crews of the five vessels were told to abandon ship before the attacks, according to the US military.
The latest strikes are part of a dual economic and military approach by President Donald Trump as he struggles to bring an end to the war. The Trump administration has imposed sanctions on additional elements of Iran's aviation industry, targeting more than two dozen commercial and private airlines as well as foreign cargo service providers.
