US Military Presence Blamed for Gulf Pollution, Iranians Seek Trillion-Dollar Compensation
Iran's foreign ministry is shifting blame for pollution in Gulf waters to US military operations. The comments come after several oil spills were reported, including one that affected beaches and an environmentally sensitive mangrove forest on the island of Qeshm.
Fuad said the environmental damage 'stems from the US military presence and the wars it has waged in the region over the past five decades.'
Iranian officials estimated the damage at 'trillions of dollars' and called for the United States to be held accountable.
Last week, Iran called for compensation after an oil slick reached Qeshm island.
