US Natural Gas Boom: A Confluence of Technologies and Regulatory Courage
The US natural gas industry has experienced a remarkable resurgence in recent years, transforming from a 'depleted resource' to a dominant player in global energy production.
According to the Energy Information Administration, the nation now produces over a quarter of the world's supply of natural gas and is a net exporter. The fuel has become fundamental to electricity production, with 43% of US power generated from natural gas.
This transformation is attributed to a confluence of technological advancements, regulatory changes, and commercial courage that spanned more than 50 years. Horizontal drilling in the 1980s ushered in a new era in gas extraction with hydraulic fracturing, which was perfected over two decades of trial and error by companies like Mitchell Energy & Development Corp.
The Rayburn Energy Station in Texas is an exemplary case study of this shift, as it represents a significant move into natural gas-fired generation by the Rayburn Electric Cooperative. The plant's 758 megawatts of baseload power are generated using Siemens combustion turbines and a steam turbine, while a new peaker turbine station will provide additional capacity.
