US Natural Gas Production Dominated by Four States
The United States produced a massive 47.7 trillion cubic feet of natural gas in 2025, but what's more revealing is where it came from. According to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), four states alone account for an astonishing 61.3% of the country's total production.
Texas leads the pack with over a quarter of American natural gas production, extracting 13,603 billion cubic feet in 2025, which is equivalent to 28.5% of the country's total. This dominance comes mainly from the Permian Basin, one of North America's most productive shale formations.
The state's strength lies in the fact that gas is largely associated with oil, meaning it's a byproduct of wells drilled for oil. When the price of oil rises and drilling accelerates in the Permian, the country has more gas available even if no one decides to produce more gas.
