US Natural Gas Production Surges, but Market Faces Supply Glut
The United States has seen a surge in natural gas production, with the Energy Information Administration projecting an average of 122.5 billion cubic feet per day throughout 2026.
However, this milestone is not necessarily a sign of a thriving market, but rather a result of drillers chasing high oil prices and treating associated gas as a byproduct.
In the Permian Basin, operators are drilling for black gold and extracting natural gas along with it, regardless of the market demand. This has led to a massive supply overhang, with inventories tracking towards nearly 4 trillion cubic feet heading into the winter heating season.
The high production levels have put downward pressure on Henry Hub spot prices, which are lingering well below historical averages for peak injection periods.
