US Naval Blockade on Iran Continues to Drive Up Oil Prices
The US naval blockade on Iran remains in place, with no deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz in sight. As a result, oil prices are rising.
Brent crude, the international benchmark, has climbed 1.5% to $84.80 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate, the US benchmark, is hovering below $80 a barrel.
President Donald Trump signaled a shift towards economic pressure on Iran, stating that the country is in 'very bad shape' and that the situation will 'work out'. He described the situation as a 'chess game', suggesting that the US is taking a patient approach to negotiations.
Tehran has set out fresh conditions for reopening the waterway, including an end to US aggressive behavior, a permanent end to war and aggression against Iran and its allies, and a withdrawal of US naval and air forces from the region.
