The White House has announced that the United States controls the Strait of Hormuz, citing US forces' clearance of Iranian mines and protection of nearly 1,500 commercial vessels.

The assertion is part of a broader campaign to cut Iran off from sources of revenue, with the administration claiming that American military operations have weakened Tehran's ability to use the strategically important passage as leverage.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly stated that the US Navy has gained control over the strait, saying 'The only one that has control of the Strait of Hormuz right now is the United States Navy.'

According to the administration, nearly 1,500 commercial vessels have travelled through the waterway under US protection, carrying 750 million barrels of crude oil to international markets.
