US Oil Dependence: A Problem We Can't Seem to Overcome

The United States is still heavily reliant on oil from the Middle East, despite numerous promises to reduce this dependence. President Joe Biden has stated that there's 'nothing we can't do' if we work together, but it seems like we're stuck with our current situation. The Wall Street Journal reports that Gulf states have resigned themselves to Iran's control of the Strait of Hormuz.

One reason for this reliance is the difference in oil quality between U.S. and Middle Eastern production. American refineries are geared towards processing lighter, sweeter crude from shale formations, while the Middle East produces heavier, higher-sulfur crude. Building new refineries to accommodate this shift would be costly, with some estimates suggesting it could cost billions of dollars.

Furthermore, new refineries would face environmental regulations that make them a less appealing option. However, some argue that this is simply defeatism and that we should be taking steps to tap into alternative oil sources, such as the North Sea. President Trump has reportedly spoken with the UK's prime minister about opening up the region for oil production, which could potentially boost the UK economy.

Another issue at play is the influence of far-left environmentalists who have restricted U.S. access to offshore oil resources in California and Florida. While improved technology has reduced the likelihood of oil spills, critics argue that the risks are still too great. The alternative is continued reliance on Middle Eastern oil, with all its attendant costs in human lives and dollars.
