US Oil Giants Reap Massive Profits as Iran Conflict Drives Energy Prices Higher

The ongoing conflict between the US and Iran has led to a significant increase in energy prices, benefiting American oil giants such as Exxon Mobil and Chevron. The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway that accounts for a fifth of the world's oil supply, was severely impacted by the conflict, leading to a surge in Brent crude prices from $70 to over $100 per barrel.

Exxon Mobil reported a 105% increase in second-quarter profits to $14.53 billion, while Chevron nearly quadrupled its profits to $12.07 billion. The average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in the US reached $4.11, up from $3 before the conflict began.

Lawmakers have proposed taxing major oil producers for windfall profits, with Democrats introducing bills in March to impose a per-barrel excise tax on companies that produced or imported at least 300,000 barrels of oil per day in 2025. The tax would be 50% of the difference between the oil price at the time of the levy and the average price per barrel last year.

Refineries, which turn crude oil into gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and home heating oil, are enjoying historically high 'crack spreads' due to the conflict. This has led to significant profits for companies such as Exxon and Chevron, but not all oil producers have benefited equally, with those in the Middle East struggling to get their liquefied natural gas out of the Persian Gulf or having damaged oil fields or processing facilities.
