US Oil Production Forecast Edges Higher in EIA STEo

The US Energy Information Administration (EIA) has released its monthly Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEo), which forecasts that US oil production will average 13.83 million barrels per day (bpd) in August, up from 13.82 million bpd in July. However, for September, the forecast is slightly lower at 13.77 million bpd.

The EIA's STEo is a forecasting document that revises and updates previous estimates rather than providing new hard data. The revisions are marginal, with output nudged higher across the horizon and demand trimmed slightly in the front end. Gas production has been raised further out.

Historically, crude oil prices have only reacted when the STEo revisions shift the implied balance in a direction that the market hasn't already priced. Incremental changes of this size tend to fade quickly, with positioning reverting to the weekly inventory and rig-count cadence.
