US Oil Reserves Plummet to Lowest Levels Since 1982 Amid Ongoing Iran Conflict

America's oil reserves have hit their lowest level in over four decades. According to a recent report from the U.S. Energy Information Administration, there are currently 289.7 million barrels left as of August 21.

This marks a significant drop from the 346.8 million barrels recorded in 2023, when President Joe Biden ordered the release of 180 million barrels of crude oil to mitigate a shortfall caused by Russia's war in Ukraine.

The Strategic Petroleum Reserve is an emergency stockpile created by President Gerald Ford to protect the American economy from major oil shortages and support national security needs.

Since the start of the Iran war, the U.S. has used 125.7 million barrels from its strategic oil reserves. The largest oil supply disruption in recent history was triggered by the shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz, which restricts shipping traffic through the waterway.
