US Presses South Korea to Boost Strait of Hormuz Contributions
The US government is pressing South Korea to contribute more to securing freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, citing Seoul's status as a major importer of Middle Eastern crude oil. According to a White House official, Washington is 'still waiting' for South Korea to commit resources to the region.
A Defense Department official echoed this sentiment, stating that President Trump has publicly stated that he expects allies to step up and support the defense of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
The US has repeatedly called on its allies to expand their military and security roles around the Strait of Hormuz as tensions in the waterway have persisted following the US conflict with Iran. Trump has specifically named South Korea in pressing for greater contributions, suggesting that Seoul had not done enough to support the United States in the war with Iran.
The South Korean government is reviewing concrete options for contributing to the Strait of Hormuz and has not ruled out the possibility of overseas troop deployment. However, it emphasized that any military contribution would need to balance its readiness posture on the Korean Peninsula.
