US Prioritizes Lower Gas Prices Over Iran Nuclear Threat
US Vice President JD Vance has stated that bringing down gasoline prices for American consumers is now Washington's top priority in the Iran war. This shift in emphasis comes after Iran largely closed the Strait of Hormuz in response to the US-Israeli war, which began in late February.
Tehran has used the disruption as a bargaining tool against Washington, with President Donald Trump facing political pressure due to rising gasoline prices and domestic opposition to the war. Republicans also fear that the conflict could hurt their chances in the November midterm elections and threaten their control of Congress.
Vance explained that the US now wants to restore the flow of oil through the strait and reduce fuel costs for Americans, which are currently high due to Iran's restrictions on traffic through the waterway. The Strait of Hormuz serves as a major route for global oil supplies.
