US Replaces Qatar as India's Top LNG Supplier Amid Dramatic Export Decline
India's liquefied natural gas (LNG) import landscape has undergone significant changes over the past three months. During May-July, the US emerged as India's largest LNG supplier, shipping in a record 2.19 million tonnes, up from just 0.55 million tonnes during the same period last year.
This shift is largely due to Qatar's dramatic decline in exports to India, plummeting by a staggering 91% year-over-year, down to just 0.23 million tonnes.
The Equirus Securities report highlights India's efforts to diversify its LNG sourcing, reducing dependence on Qatari supplies and strengthening imports from the US, Africa, and other Middle Eastern exporters.
India's total natural gas consumption rose to 197 million metric standard cubic metres per day (mmscmd) in June, with LNG consumption reaching 110 mmscmd, up 13% from May and 10% higher than June last year.
