The Economist recently declared China to be the world's dominant oil power, but this assertion is disputed. Jonathan Bass, CEO of Argent LNG, notes that 'energy is the foundational brick of the global economy.' The U.S. has been the world's largest producer of crude oil for eight straight years, from 2018 through 2025. Last year, it produced 13.6 million barrels per day, a figure expected to increase to 14.2 million next year.

Russia is in second place, but its production is forecast to decline due to Ukraine's attacks on refineries. China, on the other hand, was sixth in last year's rankings with 4.3 million barrels per day. The Economist argues that China's influence over oil prices stems from its ability to control demand and draw upon its petroleum reserve.

However, this claim is challenged by KT McFarland, former deputy national security advisor under President Trump. She notes that the U.S. has developed new engineering and drilling techniques that have made it a leading energy producer. By selling oil and gas, the U.S. can exert influence over global markets.

Jonathan Bass describes the U.S. as 'the world's light switch,' with control over energy production and distribution giving it significant leverage. China's ability to set prices is limited by its reliance on sanctioned oil from Iran and Russia.
