US Sanctions on Iran Threaten Global Economic Chaos
The United States has announced plans to impose fresh sanctions on Iran in what Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent calls 'the single greatest financial offensive ever marshalled against an adversary'. The move is expected to include secondary sanctions, which would target any country or entity trading with Iran.
Iran's security chief, Mohsen Rezaei, warned that Tehran would retaliate with an 'earthquake-like' response if the US proceeds with the proposed measures. He also cautioned neighboring countries against joining the US sanctions campaign, stating that if they do, not a drop of oil will leave the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran's foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, dismissed the expected sanctions as a sign of US desperation, arguing that the measures would fail to defeat Tehran. He said the US has shifted from military operations to what he described as 'the same old plans'. The Iranian government views the move as an attempt to assert US jurisdiction over the world.
China and Russia have shown no interest in succumbing to US pressure, with China's foreign ministry spokesperson stating that they oppose unilateral sanctions lacking basis in international law. Pakistan's army chief has also visited Tehran to explore reviving talks on a stalled memorandum of understanding between the two countries.
