US Sanctions Spark Global Oil Price Surge
The latest US sanctions on Iran have sent shockwaves through global oil markets, and India is not immune to the effects. While India's direct exposure to Iranian crude is limited, the country's energy sector may still feel the pinch due to China's scramble for alternative barrels.
China, which imports the majority of Iranian oil, could be forced to compete more aggressively for Russian and other alternative supplies, pushing up prices for Indian refiners. According to Sumit Ritolia, Lead Research Analyst at Kpler, 'If China comes to the market, it will tighten supply.'
This increased competition would likely drive up global oil prices, making it harder for India to import crude. Brent crude was trading around $92 per barrel on August 25, and a sustained rise in prices could widen India's current account deficit by 0.3-0.4% of GDP.
