US, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan Unite Against Iran-Backed Militias in Escalating Conflict
A new escalation in the ongoing conflict between Iran and US-backed forces has begun after Jordan intercepted five Iranian missiles launched early Wednesday. The incident occurred hours after the US military said it had knocked down an Iranian missile barrage launched against American forces in the Middle East, marking a return to hostilities after a brief pause.
The US Central Command announced that they worked with Saudi Arabia's forces to strike sites in Iraq used by Tehran-backed militias to launch attacks. The statement emphasized that further attacks on American troops or Saudi Arabia's energy infrastructure would risk additional action from the US.
The fighting marks the return of a period of escalation, which had been temporarily paused following weeks of tension over the strategic Strait of Hormuz, through which 20% of the world's traded oil normally flows. The conflict has claimed four US troops in recent weeks, and the Pentagon has asked Congress for funding to cover the ballooning costs.
