US Secures Venezuelan Oil Amid Ongoing Mideast Tensions
The United States has secured Venezuelan oil to reduce its dependence on Middle Eastern supply routes. Venezuela's production is around 1.1 million barrels a day, but rebuilding the country's wider oil industry will require significant capital and infrastructure investments.
The deal allows the U.S. to redirect more of that supply towards American refineries without passing through Hormuz, which has been threatened by Iranian actions. This reduces U.S. exposure to one of the world's most vulnerable shipping routes.
Oil from Venezuela can reach the U.S. Gulf Coast refineries, many of which were designed to process heavy crude. The agreement also changes who controls Venezuelan oil flows, with China losing a significant position in the country's energy sector.
