US Seeks Rapid Oil Production Boost in Venezuela
The US government aims to increase oil production in Venezuela to 1.5 million barrels per day in the short term, according to US Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum. This goal is part of a larger strategy to strengthen US energy security and offset disruptions to global energy supplies linked to the Middle East conflict.
Burgum emphasized that US companies will play a key role in rapidly increasing production, citing Venezuela's substantial oil reserves and its location outside the Middle East conflict zone as strategic advantages. The agreement between Washington and Caracas covers 17 strategic oil fields, with an expected investment of over $100 billion.
US-based Chevron plans to invest more than $7 billion over five years, aiming to increase production at its Venezuelan operations to around 600,000 barrels per day. Italian energy company Eni has also signed a deal with Venezuela to develop the Junín-5 oil field in the Orinoco Basin.
The US government sees this opportunity as a chance to replenish the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve at lower prices and take advantage of Venezuela's large reserves, which have not been fully utilized due to previous production issues.
