US Signals Indefinite Naval Blockade of Iranian Ports Amid Hormuz Crisis

The ongoing conflict in the Strait of Hormuz has reached a critical point as the US has indicated that it may maintain its naval blockade of Iranian ports 'indefinitely'. This announcement comes after months of negotiations between Iran, the US, and Oman aimed at restoring navigation through the waterway.

According to US War Secretary Pete Hegseth, the US Navy can rotate ships in and out of the region to maintain the blockade. Hegseth stated that 'indefinitely, the United States Navy can maintain a blockade like that because we'll rotate ships in and out, as we have, and we'll continue to.'

The blockade is having far-reaching consequences beyond Iran's coastline. The country has restricted traffic through the strategic strait, while attacks and threats of interception have deterred commercial shipping.

The result is effectively a choked energy artery, with roughly one-quarter of the world's seaborne oil trade normally passing through the strait. The International Energy Agency (IEA) has sharply reduced its 2026 global oil-supply forecast, expecting a 4% drop in supply and a projected 1.27 million-bpd deficit relative to demand.

Markets can tolerate temporary disruptions more easily than open-ended ones. An indefinite confrontation encourages refiners, airlines, shipping companies, and governments to assume that disrupted supplies may persist, forcing them to compete for alternative crude, build inventories, and pay more for transportation and insurance.
