US SPR Falls Below 300M Barrels: What Does it Mean for Oil & Energy ETFs?
The US Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) has been depleted to below 300 million barrels due to emergency oil releases linked to the Iran conflict, raising concerns about America's ability to respond to an energy shock.
The SPR drawdown initially stabilizes crude oil prices by adding supply to the market and offsetting supply disruptions. However, once the SPR becomes sufficiently depleted, the market may place a greater premium on the possibility that Washington has less ammunition available for the next supply shock, increasing geopolitical risk.
According to Siddharth Misra, a petroleum engineering professor at Texas A&M University, repeated drawdowns can alter cavern geometry and reduce extraction infrastructure efficiency, potentially limiting the speed of crude release during a future emergency.
