US Stocks Edge Lower Amid Oil Price Surge and Earnings Reports
US stocks took a downturn on Thursday afternoon as oil prices rose and companies continued to release their earnings reports. The S&P 500 fell by 0.1%, hovering just below its record set earlier in the week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 404 points, or 0.7%, while the Nasdaq composite remained relatively unchanged.
The market had been soaring on Monday and Tuesday, setting new records, but slowed down over the past two days. Clark Bellin, president of Bellwether Wealth, noted that August is typically a volatile month for stocks.
Some companies fared better than others, with Warner Bros. Discovery rising 1.7% after beating earnings expectations and Molson Coors increasing by 1.5%. However, Honeywell Aerospace plummeted 21.2% after its results fell short of forecasts, while AppLovin slumped 18.4% due to mixed financial results.
Despite these fluctuations, strong overall profits from companies have alleviated concerns about the market being overpriced, with around 85% of S&P 500 companies reporting their results so far this period.
