US Stocks Sink as Fed Holds Rates, Oil Prices Soar on Iranian Conflict
US stocks took a hit on Wednesday after the Federal Reserve declined to raise interest rates, despite concerns about inflation. The S&P 500 fell 1.5%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 2.2% and the Nasdaq composite lost 1.7%. Technology stocks, including Nvidia, Micron Technology, and AMD, were among the biggest losers due to their strong ties to artificial intelligence.
The oil market saw a significant increase, with Brent crude jumping 7.3% to settle above $88 per barrel after fighting resumed in the war with Iran and raised concerns about global oil flow. This surge in oil prices has raised worries that inflation will reaccelerate, just when it had begun to slow more than economists expected.
The Fed's decision not to raise interest rates was seen as a sign of caution, with Fed Chair Kevin Warsh implying that the bond market may already be doing some of the work to restrain inflation. However, higher rates can keep a lid on inflation but also slow the economy and undercut prices for stocks and other investments.
