US Stocks Slide as Oil Prices Soar Amid Inflation Concerns
The US stock market experienced a decline on Tuesday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average down 0.09% and the Nasdaq Composite falling 0.37%. The S&P 500 slipped 0.16%, while the Russell 2000 rose 0.59%. The weakness in the major benchmarks was led by technology and consumer-facing stocks, which are sensitive to inflation and interest rates.
The decline came despite a strong opening, when the Dow had started at 54,065.02, up 89.04 points or 0.16%. However, selling pressure emerged as investors became more cautious about higher energy prices and inflation concerns. Brent crude initially climbed around 2%, reaching a one-week high, before reversing.
The retreat from the session's earlier oil surge helped prevent a deeper equity selloff. However, crude remains high enough to keep inflation concerns alive. Investors are now assessing whether the recent energy rally has further room to run.
