US Stocks Slip Ahead of Busy Week Amid Bond Market Concerns

US stocks are experiencing a calm Monday ahead of a packed week of market-moving events. The S&P 500 slipped 0.4% and moved further away from its all-time high set earlier this month.

Nvidia, the tech giant that has been a huge winner in the AI boom, sank 2.6% and was the heaviest weight on the S&P 500 index. Other tech stocks like Micron Technology and Broadcom also contributed to the decline, falling 7.2% and 1.9%, respectively.

The bond market is another factor influencing stock prices, with long-term Treasury yields increasing due to concerns about high inflation, government debt, and oil prices. The US Treasury Department's surprise move last week to increase planned buybacks of Treasurys may have only a limited effect in containing the rise in yields.

A drop in oil prices is also helping to bring down yields, with Brent crude falling 1.9% to $90.95 per barrel. However, analysts warn that the US government's attempts to influence the bond market could ultimately lead to higher pressure on inflation and a potential rate hike by the Federal Reserve.

The Fed's new chairman, Kevin Warsh, is set to deliver a speech on Friday at an economic symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Expectations are high among investors for Warsh to discuss inflation and how the Fed could react, but some economists warn that his reluctance to give clear signals about interest rates may lead to market uncertainty.
