US Stocks Surge as Corporate Profits Soar Amid Easing Oil Prices
The US stock market is rapidly approaching new record highs as corporate profits continue to soar and oil prices ease. The S&P 500 index surged 1.9% on Tuesday, putting it on track to surpass its all-time high set just a couple months ago. Despite concerns about inflation, the war in Iran, and potential bubbles in stock prices due to artificial-intelligence euphoria, Wall Street is driven by robust corporate earnings.
Caterpillar and Palantir Technologies led the charge, with Caterpillar's revenue exceeding $20 billion for the first time in a quarter. Both companies reported stronger profits than expected, with Palantir's CEO Alex Karp describing its performance as 'otherworldly.' The AI boom is benefiting Caterpillar through increased orders for turbines used to power data centers.
Oil prices also contributed to the market's enthusiasm, dropping 5.4% to $79.25 per barrel. This decrease helped alleviate concerns about inflation and relaxed pressure on bond yields, which fell to 4.63%. Despite these positive developments, analysts caution that more oil price swings could be ahead.
