US Stocks Tumble Under Pressure from Oil Prices and Bond Market
US stocks are experiencing pressure as oil prices and the bond market exert their influence on Wall Street. The S&P 500 fell by 0.4%, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average down by 406 points, or 0.8%. Meanwhile, the Nasdaq composite lost 0.7%.
The 10-year Treasury yield rose to 5.00% from 4.97% late Monday and briefly touched 5.04% overnight. This significant increase in yields means that everyone, from the US government to households and businesses, must pay more in interest to borrow money, which can slow down the overall economy.
Darrell Cronk, president of Wells Fargo Investment Institute, stated that 'the result is a market that must work harder to generate earnings growth just as investors become less willing to pay premium valuations for that growth.'
