US Strikes Against Iran Escalate Amid Shipping Route Tensions
The US military is escalating its strikes against Iran as clashes over shipping routes continue to escalate. The latest round of attacks, which are part of the 13th night of operations, aim to 'further degrade' Iran's ability to threaten civilian mariners and commercial vessels in regional waters.
Earlier this week, Yemen's Houthi rebels said they attacked two Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea, potentially widening the conflict. The US Central Command stated that its strikes are designed to regain control over the Strait of Hormuz and restore international shipping flows.
The threat of further attacks has sent oil prices soaring, with Brent crude hitting a high of around $100 a barrel. This is the highest price since May, before a preliminary peace agreement between the US and Iran collapsed.
As tensions rise, Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi of Iraq met with Iranian leaders in Tehran to call for peace and dialogue. Meanwhile, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that the region is being pulled 'into an ever-widening circle of confrontation.'
