The U.S. military has launched new strikes against Iran as clashes escalate over shipping routes in the Middle East.

According to a statement from U.S. Central Command, the latest attacks are designed to 'further degrade Iran's ability to threaten civilian mariners and commercial vessels transiting regional waters.'

The operation is part of an ongoing campaign by the U.S. to regain control over the Strait of Hormuz and restore the flow of international shipping.

A recent attack on two Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea has added fuel to the fire, with the Houthi rebels claiming responsibility for the assault.

The price of Brent crude oil spiked more than 6% Thursday, reaching a high of $100 a barrel as tensions continue to rise.
