The conflict between the US and Iran escalated on September 5 as both sides exchanged fire at sea. The US claimed to have struck three Iranian oil carriers, while Tehran said it targeted six vessels.

According to Admiral Brad Cooper, head of US Central Command, 'If you shoot at two of our ships, we will impose an even higher economic cost, taking out three of yours.'

The Strait of Hormuz has been a point of contention between the two countries. The strait is a crucial waterway for global oil supplies, with 90% of Iran's crude exports passing through it before the US blockade began in mid-April.
