US Strikes Iranian Oil Tankers After Ballistic Missile Attack on Warships
The United States has launched strikes against three Iranian oil tankers in response to Tehran's targeting of American Navy warships with ballistic missiles. The US military claims that no American service members were injured during the attack, but two of the ships were permanently disabled and a third was destroyed after its crew was ordered to abandon ship.
The strikes took place off Iran's Kharg Island, near Jask, east of the Strait of Hormuz, and in the Gulf of Oman. US Central Command commander Admiral Brad Cooper warned Tehran that the United States would not hesitate to defend American forces and would 'destroy Iran's limited and exposed oil fleet' if necessary.
The move marks a significant escalation in the conflict between the two nations, which began after US and Israeli operations against Iran earlier this year. The Trump administration has pursued a two-track strategy of using military force to protect American personnel and international shipping while increasing financial pressure on Iran.
