The strikes came a day after US President Donald Trump downplayed the conflict as 'small potatoes', but tensions between the two nations have been escalating for months.
According to reports, the American military said Navy warships were targeted with missiles, prompting the counterattack on the Iranian oil tankers.
The incident marks a new tilt back toward fighting after six months of on-again, off-again conflict that began with US and Israeli attacks on Iran on February 28.
