US Strikes Iranian Oil Tankers in Retaliation for Warship Attacks
US forces launched a retaliatory attack on Iranian oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman on September 5, 2026. The strike was in response to Iran firing ballistic missiles at two American warships, which were not harmed.
The US military said that an aircraft carrier and destroyer evaded multiple attacks by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) with no personnel casualties reported.
As a result of the attack on the oil tankers, one vessel was destroyed near the Gulf of Oman. The M/T Kylo tanker was not carrying oil at the time, and its crew had been ordered to abandon ship before it was hit in multiple locations.
