US Strikes Iranian Tankers Amid Escalating Strait of Hormuz Tensions
The United States military has struck three Iranian-linked oil tankers in response to missile attacks on US Navy warships. The M/T Kylo, also known as Noxen, sank after being hit multiple times by American forces.
The strike was part of a confrontation centered on the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important energy corridors. According to CENTCOM, the tanker was unladen and its crew had abandoned ship before the attack.
The US targets included the M/T Downy off Kharg Island and the M/T Stark 1 near Jask. The command described all three tankers as part of a multibillion-dollar shipping network that helps finance the IRGC and its regional partners.
Oil markets have been on alert due to the escalating tensions, with Brent crude settling at $96.28 a barrel on Friday, up 7.6% for the week, while WTI finished at $91.48, gaining nearly 10% over the same period.
